Our aviation mechanic courses are designed to teach students what they need to know to prepare to test for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification and to prepare for entry-level aviation technician roles.79,80
Universal Technical Institute and its family of schools, including MIAT College of Technology, follow a blended learning format, which combines in-person, hands-on lab work led by instructors experienced in the industry with an online curriculum within the classroom.18

If you want to train for a career as an entry-level aircraft mechanic, first determine which of our programs you’d like to pursue. Our Airframe and Powerplant Technician training program is available at our UTI campuses in Avondale, Arizona, Long Beach, California, and Miramar, Florida. The A&P and Aviation Maintenance Technology programs are offered at our MIAT Canton, Michigan, campus. Then, follow these steps:
Once you start school, it takes just 2 years or less to graduate, depending on the program and location. You can then apply and test for FAA certification, and then begin applying for entry-level jobs in the aviation technician industry.79
Our programs are designed to teach students the basics of air, airframe and power plant science. You’ll learn skills like turbine engine operation, power plant lubrication systems, hydraulics and pneumatics, and aircraft troubleshooting. The following are some of the types of courses to expect from the programs (course titles and descriptions are subject to change).
Students receive a general introduction to the FAA’s requirements for sheetmetal fabrication and repair. They learn industry standard practices for repair procedures, as well as fundamental operations like oxyacetylene equipment operation and safety.
Students learn about composite materials like Kevlar and fiberglass, which are used in aircraft construction. They also learn about historical building techniques and materials, including fabric and wood.
Students learn about aircraft communication, navigation, autopilot and approach control systems. This course also teaches students about FAA regulations, inspection, service and installation.
In this course, students learn about basic hydraulic and pneumatic principles, operation and servicing of equipment. They learn about component repair, covering fluids, seals, washers and pressures. Students also participate in hands-on activities like inspecting hydraulic pumps for efficiency after a detailed disassembly and reassembly.
Students discover how to identify lubricants and learn what their functions are. They learn how to service and adjust the components, install lines and rings, interpret FAA regulations pertaining to oil tanks, and disassemble and reassemble engine oil pumps.
Students develop an understanding of turbine engine design, including turboprop engines, turbofan engines and turbojet engines. They learn about the multiple operating principles, as well as application benefits and the evolution of various designs.
Students learn about the theory of aircraft propellers, installation procedures, minor and major repair classifications, and aircraft applications of propellers and governors. They learn how to inspect, check, repair and service propeller synchronization, how to balance propellers, and how to install, remove and troubleshoot propellers.

After completing the aviation mechanic coursework, you’ll be ready to apply your knowledge and skills to FAA A&P certification testing. You’ll have experience working with real machinery. You’ll have received guidance from experienced instructors on the correct procedures and safety methods. You’ll have the technical knowledge you need to successfully complete the tasks of an entry-level aviation technician.

To be eligible for enrollment, you’ll need need: a standards-based high school diploma that’s authorized by the state you graduate in; a state-issued GED certificate or state-authorized equivalent exam; successful completion of an officially recognized home-schooling program; or evidence of having previously attended a Title IV-eligible program or graduation from a degree program at the postsecondary level.
Yes. Our programs offer a blended learning model of in-class, hands-on instruction, as well as aviation mechanic online courses.18
We have many students who enter our program with no prior aircraft knowledge or experience. As long as you’re willing to learn and dedicate effort to your aviation mechanic courses, you can succeed in the program.
