Marine Technician Job Description

The daily duties of a marine technician can vary, but common responsibilities often include:

  • Making oil and other fluid changes
  • Performing preventative maintenance on vessels
  • Driving and docking different vessels
  • Performing plumbing and intake repairs
  • Testing various boat equipment
  • Repairing functions, including engine and electrical work

It’s important when pursuing a career as a marine technician to gain hands-on experience and training. Technology is always advancing, and employers are looking for qualified professionals to fill roles.

The Marine Technician Training program offered at Marine Mechanics Institute (MMI) is designed to train students for entry-level careers in the industry.1 It was developed to teach the foundations of marine product service, repair and troubleshooting.

Marine Technician Salary & Job Outlook

Knowing the average marine technician salary and the outlook for jobs in the industry can be helpful to ensure that the career path is right for you and your goals for the future!

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual salary for motorboat mechanics and service technicians in the United States was $48,280 in May 2022.31 This means half of marine technicians earned more and half earned less. Keep in mind that salary depends on several factors, including experience, employer, demand and cost of living in the area.
