One of the first subjects students learn when starting the Automotive program, this course dives into the fundamentals of a vehicle’s internal engine operation and how to repair it. Students learn the various components that make up the internal combustion engine and completely disassemble an engine to become familiar with how individual parts work together.
Students learn theory, diagnosis and repair information necessary to safely and effectively service hybrid vehicles and alternative-fuel systems and technology. Students learn the principles of service advising and how they fit into service operations. In addition, they learn written and verbal communication standards typical of a professional dealership environment in providing customer service, questioning techniques, efficient diagnosis of customer concerns, report completion, organization, and co-worker/management interaction skills.
Students learn to assemble and disassemble electronic automatic and manual transmissions while learning the inner workings of multiple gear and shift patterns. They’ll also learn to assemble and disassemble rear differentials and drive shafts, replace U-joints, understand driveline angles, and more.
Students learn to identify, diagnose and safely service wheels and tires, steering and suspension systems, and components. Students also learn the basics of tire mounting and balancing, struts, ball joints, tie-rod ends, rack and pinion, and steering gear boxes.
Students learn to diagnose and service wheel bearings, brake power assist systems, brake hydraulic systems, parking brakes, brake electrical systems, anti-lock braking systems, traction control and stability control systems. They’ll also learn the different components used in hydraulic brake systems, including the assembly and disassembly of the master cylinder, calipers, drum assembly and proper bleeding.
Students learn the science of electrical principles and electricity and how they’re related to automotive technology. The coursework also covers how various electrical components operate, how to read wiring diagrams, and how to build and test circuits.
Students learn about EPA rules and regulations as they cover the different types of refrigerants and oils in the market today and how to handle them properly. Additionally, students learn about the potential dangers of working with refrigerant and high system pressures and how to avoid such situations.
Students gain knowledge in calculating compression ratios, calculating bore/stroke, port matching, camshaft understanding and much more. The skills learned in this course will be used to disassemble a V-8 engine, inspect and measure every component, and reassemble and time the rotating assembly.
Building on the material covered in Power & Performance I, students gain knowledge in fuel flow, ignition timing, exhaust flow, engine add-on performance, engine installation and dynamometer operation. Students have the opportunity to install their engine on a rolling chassis and install carburetion, ignition, and an exhaust system.
Students learn to use different types of tuning software to tune normally aspirated, supercharged, turbo-charged and nitrous-powered vehicles on a chassis dynamometer. To do this, students modify vehicles by changing parameters in the engine computer while the car is sitting on a chassis dyno. After the dyno run, students look at fuel trim and ignition timing to see if the engine is lean or rich. They then make adjustments to obtain the vehicle’s maximum power and torque while remaining emissions-legal.
A career as an automotive technician is full of possibilities, and that’s no different in South Florida, where auto mechanics may find a lot of clients coming through tourism, manufacturing or agriculture. Most of our grads start out working as entry-level technicians or in other entry-level roles. As with any industry, over time, you may be able to advance in your career with hard work. Most employers are looking for the foundational knowledge needed to work in the automotive mechanic industry, and that’s where formal training like that offered at UTI Miramar can help.
